Sonablate®

High Intensity Focused Ultrasound (HIFU) Innovative, Visually Directed HIFU technology is utilized in Europe and selected countries outside of the U.S. for the non-invasive ablation of tumors in the prostate gland. After insertion into the rectum a HIFU probe transmits ultrasound waves at high frequency into the prostate. The pulse energy is concentrated within a narrow focal point causing a resulting temperature peak of up to 90oC, which leads to highly localized cell destruction. The temperature drops sharply outside of the concentration point limiting cell destruction to a finite lesion. Ablation of the entire prostate is achieved by creating numerous, adjacent HIFU lesions until the 3D volume of the gland is covered in its entirety while rectal wall and capsule are spared. The treatment volume is pre-defined in the planning phase and the surgeon compares planned against actual volume throughout the entire procedure.
Visually Directed HIFU with the Sonbablate 500 Visually directed HIFU with the Sonablate 500 uses clean, non-ionizing energy to significantly reduce the collateral tissue damage that is associated with radiation therapy or radical prostatectomy. Side effects like impotence and incontinence that are common with competing technologies are significantly reduced and quality of life is improved. It can be performed as an outpatient procedure. Unlike other HIFU methods, it does not require a prior transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP) for volume reduction of the gland. Newly added Tissue Change Monitoring (TCM) software enables real-time detection of tissue changes, which improves the surgeon’s ability to assess individual HIFU lesions and to adjust the desired energy pulses for optimum ablation and minimal collateral damage. The Sonablate 500 from Misonix is available for sale in Europe only.	Visually Directed HIFU with the Sonablate 500 is only available outside of the U.S.

The Company's UKHIFU and Misonix France business units have been integrated into the Misonix HIFU Technologies entity.
